Find a MetLife Dentist in Millbrae, San Bruno, Burlingame, San Mateo

MetLife, the second largest dental insurance provider in California, offers one PPO and one HMO plan nationwide. Despite its size, patients may have difficulty locating a reputable MetLife dentist within their network. However, Dr. Tsai and her team have been MetLife providers for many years, and are an exception to this difficulty.

Kinds of MetLife Insurance

There are two basic types of MetLife insurance that your employer may offer - PPO and HMO.

MetLife PPO

MetLife PPO is, as its name implies, is MetLife's PPO plan. It is a PPO plan, which means you can see just about any dentist you like. However, in order to get your full benefits (
discounted insurance prices, full coverage on treatment, etc.), you need to see a MetLife Dentist (in-network). Typically this plan requires you to pay more per month or out of your paycheck. However, the good news is MetLife dentists on this plan are able to provide you with better benefits such as night guards for patients who grind their teeth at night, dental sealants, orthodontics or invisalign, and dental implants. MetLife plans rarely cover all expenses in full but they generally have better benefits for our patients.

Not all MetLife Dentists are In-Network Providers

Many patients are misled to think that all MetLife dentists are in-network providers. This is NOT true. If you have a MetLife PPO plan and visit a provider who is not in-network BUT takes or “accepts” MetLife you will not get the discount prices and your out-of-pocket costs will be much higher. Most MetLife plans have a 20-30% savings for our patients, so it is important to make sure your dentist is in-network for your MetLife plan. We'd be happy to take care of this for you before you come into our office. If you have any questions about the costs or different MetLife Plans, please give us a call.

MetLife DHMO / HMO Plan

MetLife also offers a DHMO or HMO Dental plan, which is a low-cost option that is suitable for emergencies and basic dental cleanings. However, it is not intended for major dental work such as crowns, bridges, and root canals. One drawback of HMO or DHMO dental plans is the financial incentive that can lead to inadequate treatment. For instance, most DHMO dental plans pay a low flat fee to dentists regardless of the number of visits, which can discourage dentists from providing necessary treatment. Due to this, our office does not participate in any HMO or DHMO dental plans. If you have any concerns about dental implants not being properly treated by your DHMO dentist, we are happy to provide a free second opinion. Please contact us for more information.
